RFC chief executive Steven Wright announced the intention to open in 2009, an Australian Indigenous Football and Training Institute at Punt Road. This institute would host training camps for indigenous youths who demonstrated sporting talent.
Federal Sports Minister George Brandis said the government was considering a grant of $5 million towards the creation of the institute, pending a more detailed proposal from Richmond.
The government has already committed $2 million towards the Punt Rd Oval redevelopment, under which part of the existing Richmond clubrooms will be demolished, replaced by new medical, sporting and community facilities – The Age
