Goal after the siren

With his goal after the siren to win the game, Jordan McMahon joins an elite of Richmond players to have achieved the feat.

1. Doug Strang - Rd 14 vs Carlton 1932

2. Paul Sarah - Rd 19 vs StKilda

1981

3. Jordan McMahon - Rd 18 vs Melbourne 2009

All three occurrences, happened in August.

And so, searching through my archives, I have come across the newspaper report of Doug Strang's after the siren goal to beat Carlton in 1932, (courtesy of The Argus), thereby becoming the first Richmond player to achieve that feat.

The End of the Era

This is the last line-up of the Richmond Football Club for Season 1925. Published in the Argus Newspaper it shows the teams for the Rd 17 clash against Melbourne.

It was the last appearance for Richmond of two champions.

Playing in the back pocket this day, Frank Harley finished his career on 114 games, 63 goals, and 2 premierhips.

It was also the last time Vic Thorp appeared in an official game of football for Richmond. He would finish his career on 262 games and 2 premierships. Still to this day, Richmond's greatest ever full-back.

I am unsure who the other players are. Difficult to identify- but it is from the pre season of the 1923 season.

Sheedy for Coach.... now where have I seen that before ?

Sheedy for Richmond coach ?

Well it's De Ja Vu, especially if you recall the time around when Tom Hafey dramatically left the club in 1976.

The article on the left , is a snippet from 'The Age' in late 1976, showing that the club had Sheedy's name on a short list to take over from Tom Hafey.

The eventual coach... Barry Richardson.

Back in 1933, Richmond needed a new coach.

At the end of 1932, the Premiership coach Frank 'Checker' Hughes left Richmond and went to Melbourne, after the secretary Percy Page lured him with the promise of a job in his printing factory.

So the Richmond Football Club advertised the position of the 'non playing coach' in The Argus in January of 1933.

Attached is the actual advertisement. Former Richmond VFA player Billy Schmidt saw it, and submitted his application, and was elected Richmond coach. He took the club to the 1933 Grand Final, but lost to Sth Melbourne.

He never coached Richmond again.

Polly Perkins passes

that 1943 Premiership player William 'Polly' Perkins has passed away aged 89.

Perkins was the last remaining member of the 1943 Premiership side.

For what was is ultimately an historical moment for the club in its history- it was great to see two particular organisations capture the moment for posterity.

Firstly, Mr James Buchanan - a freelance photographer and multimedia expert snapped approximately 120 shots from that day. And can be located at JBPROPHOTO

A Richmond supporter, his decisions to document the majority of the players on film, allows everyone to understand the scope and magnitude of the day.

Secondly, Slattery Media - official photographers of the AFL, have an extensive collection from the day and the press conference at GSP IMAGES

It is worth nothing that if Vickery does end up playing League Football , he will become only the 5th Richmond player whose surname begins with a 'V', out of 1,077 Richmond players.

We have had a HISLOP play with us before, Gordon Hislop (1923-1924) and Max Hislop (1917-24, 1927).

Vale Mr Max Oppy

Max Oppy, one of the club's great rovers, has passed away at the age of 84.
He was one of the last remaining 1943 Richmond Premiership players.

Oppy was born Wiliam Max, grew up in Maryborough and barracked for Essendon.
The great Dick Reynolds was his cousin. In the 1943 Grand Final- Oppy was only 18 years ago, and given the job of tagging the Essendon champion.

If I was given a job to do I would do it to the best of my ability. They talk about taggers or whatever today, virtually that was my job for the day. Didn’t matter where he went on the field, whether he went off the ball, I went to the back pocket. Didn’t matter where dick Reynolds went , it was to keep him out of the play, because at that time he was the match winning rover and probably the best rover of the league at that time. That was the job , to blanket him and keep him out of the game.
Dick got about 6 stitches in his eyes but that was alright, he snuck into my fist. - interview with Rhett Bartlett in Aug 2004.

Richmond won that day, and Oppy was applauded by spectators and the media for his role.
The following year, the Tigers lost the 1944 Grand Final to Fitzroy.

Oppy played 185 games for Richmond, became a Life Member, and was inducted into the Richmond Hall of Fame, on the same night his life long friend, Des Rowe, was inducted. That had met each other when they were 15 years old, when Oppy's Richmond locker was next to his.

His last game of football was Rd 18 1954 vs Collingwood- he was chaired off the ground, and later admitted that it bought him to tears.

He also captained Richmond twice, both times when Des Rowe was unavailable. Coincidentally, both times were against Collingwood, and both times Richmond won.
'My record as captain is the best at Richmond, tell you now' - he told me. He is right- 100% strike rate.

He also coached the club in 1956, replacing Alby Pannam. Oppy coached for just that one year, winning 6 of the 18 games.
As a coach I think Ill forget about it. I always say I am one of the sacked coaches. As Jack Dyer said there’s only two types of coaches, the sacked ones and the ones that are going to get sacked.

In later life, he excelled at golf, winning a club chapmionship, and representated Australia at a Sportsman Event in England, the day after the British Open.

When I met him for our interview 4 years ago, he was living in Sorrento, in a small house , by himself.
He had scrapbooks on the table, easily recalled his first game of football, and was unfazed by a heart attack he had suffered earlier in the year.
After our interview he led me outside to my car, across the road was an old cemetery, no more than 30 metres from his house.
'Look on the bright side Rhett', he said ' when I die, I don't have far to go'

Belated Condolences

I have only recently received notification of the passing of several Richmond footballers during the 2008 season.
So I feel it necessary to list them here with a short bio

1. Mr Frank Hughes Jnr
Frank, was the son of Richmond 1932 Premiership Coach 'Checker' Hughes.
I was lucky enough to meet Frank Hughes in 2003, whereby our interview formed the entire basis of the 'Checker' Hughes chapter in my book RICHMOND FC: A Century of League Football.
You can read Frank's story from page 58- 61

He had a great understanding of the key role his father played in Richmond's history, and Frank himself, played for Richmond in 1944 for 3 games (and later Melbourne 1945 8 games).
Frank accepted his the award for his father's induction into the Richmond Hall of Fame.

He passed away 1 April 2008 at the age of 86 years old.

2. Mr Peter Sherman

Peter died on July 30th 2008 at the age of 83 years.

I interviewed Peter on 27 October 2001 at his home in the Sth East Suburbs.
Of the interview, only 1 paragraph made it into my Richmond publication- page 74, Peter's wonderful description of the physical specimen Dyer was, once stripped in the dressing rooms.

Peter played for Richmond in 1947 for only 2 games. However was a member of Richmond's 1946 Reserves Premiership.
I recall he had wonderful knowledge regarding the Australian Navy, and its role during World War 2.

On a side note, he is the only person I have interviewed, who bought along his own tape recorder for the interview.
His suggestions on how to prepare for an interview (based on his history when creating an oral history of the Navy), is something I am grateful to have learnt.

Farewell Mr Roberts

Mr Ken Roberts, who played 58 games for Richmond from 1947-1951, passed away on October 21st at the age of 83.

Mr Roberts played half back flank, was runner up in the 1949 Best and Fairest and won the Best First year Player Award in 1947.
He was a life member of the Richmond Former Players and Official Association.

Mr Roberts also played in Jack Dyer's last game in 1949.

Condolences to the Roberts family.

KB was unaware that Curry had put the wig on , until he saw the ad on tv one month later.

John Ritchie

I noticed in the Herald Sun Death Notices, during this week, the passing of former Richmond player Mr John Ritchie.

Mr Ritchie played from 1951- 1955, for 40 games and 2 goals. He wore numbers 35 and 30 during his career.
As a half back flanker,he started his career with Richmond for the Thirds in 1949.

By 1951, he was playing in the senior team -his debut, Round 4 1951 against Hawthorn; the Tigers won.
He played during one of Richmond's least successful eras on the field. Of the 40 games - only 19 were victories.

In 1955, he was a member of the Reserves Premiership side , which defeated Footscray by 30 points
In 1956, he was appointed captain of the Reserves - with the 'Cubs' making the Preliminary Final , before losing to South Melbourne by 21 points. The Cubs would not make the finals for another 8 years. That same year he tied for the Reserves Best and Fairest with Charlie Flannagan.

A Reserves Premiership player, Captain and Best and Fairest - our condolences to his family and friends.

It has sadly come to my attention, that 1980 premiership player Peter Welsh died last night after a long battle with illness.
Our condolences to the Welsh family.

In this, the centenary year of the Richmond Football Club in the AFL - it is an opportune time to send out an SOS, to supporters, history buffs, casual observers - regarding a two points around Richmond and its history.

Can you assist below ?

FOOTBALL RECORDS.

The AFL Record has been in existence since 1912.
That means there is approximately 1,950 Richmond Football Club records produced.

Most Richmond records from 1960- Present Day are in collectors hands, Richmond Museum, Ebay etc etc ,
but it is the Richmond records from 1912 - 1959 that are more difficult to locate.

So this SOS request is simple. If you have any Richmond records covering 1912 - 1959; and would be comfort to advise me, I hope to maintain a list of what records pre 1960 are in existence. There is no intention to purchase the records from you, and you can remain anonymous, I would just like to attempt to identify how many of the pre 1960 Richmond records are in existence.

RICHMOND GAMES

My next book project I am attempting to work on, is a detailed list of the following; every:

+ Senior Richmond match
+ Reserves Richmond match
+ Under 19's Richmond Match
+ Little League Richmond match
+ Unique matches involving RFC (ie: Appeals / Practice Matches / Post Season Matches / Pre Season Matches)

- for each of these points, I am attempting to documents the score, goalkickers, players for the teams, and unique tidbits that accompany the game.

- all score details of Senior Richmond matches exist, so do their related teams , goalkickers etc.

- if anyone is able to provide any information of score, teams, players, goalkickers for the Reserves/Under 19's/ Little League/ Unique Matches (listed above) please email me below.

Even the smallest piece of information is appreciated- as you never know, you might be the only person to discover it, or be aware of it. So think back to matches you saw growing up, or newspaper cuttings you might have- see what you can find.

- as well, I am looking for any interesting tidbits from any matches in Richmond history. These tidbits can range from , Richmond players acting as runners, unique umpiring decisions, unique moments on the field, changing in guernsey numbers, goalkicking feats (ie: 6 goals in a quarter), 'firsts' in Richmond matches, 'lasts' in Richmond matches. Any notes of interest about any matches would be much appreciated.

Tom Hafey and Kevin Bartlett respond to the criticism of Punt Road

Tom Hafey's style of football was always direct. So much so, that it won him 4 Premierships across 7 years as coach for Richmond.

And his response to the claims by Andrew Dememtriou in The Age to Caroline Wilson that Punt Road was 'a crap ground to train on. It's just a bad ground and it's the wrong size.' was almost as direct.

'That's a ridiculous statement. I think that is wrong, I don't think it is crap' Hafey said when contacted by www.rhettrospective.com this afternoon.

'They talk this way because they play on perfect grounds- yet the number of players that continue to slip on perfect ground is amazing'
'(Punt Road) is a long way better that alot of other teams have to deal with. The ground still is perfect as a training facility.

Tommy should know, for many years he has travelled the breadth of Australia, coaching junior clubs and guest speaking at little known towns. 'How would they (footballers) go playing in Queenstown- it's just gravel!' 'Remember that Docklands was rubbished initially too! and most recently Collingwood and Brisbane played in mud and rain at the Gabba. It won't always be perfect weather and grounds wont always be perfect- regardless if it is in Western Australia or Sydney'

When pressed further regarding suggestions that the ground size, may be consider a reasoning behind Richmond's lack of success- Hafey was adamant 'It has got nothing to do with it!' - citing instead an imbalance in the handballing and kicking stats of the Tigers on the weekend.
In no way, Hafey suggested, does the condition of the Punt Road ground directly relate to the Tigers performance on match day.

And 5 time Premiership player Kevin Bartlett feels the same, 'We never trained at the MCG, we trained at Punt Road, and in my opinion it never affected the Richmond style of play. It never ever impeded the Richmond style of play- and we were the longest kicking, fast kicking ball side in the competition and we trained at Punt Road.

He points out that other teams around his time of playing and coach, played on smaller grounds:
Go down and have a look at Hawthorn's old ground at Glenferrie Oval- it is the smallest ground in the world and they won premierships galore!

Suggesting that Richmond's lack of success lately is due to the state of the Punt Road Ground is something Bartlett disagrees with: 'It certainly wouldn't be an excuse! Training at Punt Road wont stop you from winning a premiership.'

And although the glorious ancient ground herself is unable to defend these Demetriou comments- there are still some Immortals who are more than happy to.

'we gave Collingwood too much at the start. You can't give good sides 7 of the first 8 scoring shots and expect to be in the game. You got to know when the right time to kick and when your out in space and able to execute them and that's something our players are getting wrong. We've made adjustments to the way we wanted to play from last year and sure that involves an element of handball but we've got the balance wrong at the moment- i think we have 170 odd kicks and over 200 handballs.

Even in saying that, we still shouldn't have made errors by foot that we did.
I think alot of the backline boys are coming along quite nicely , I think people would credit Will Thursfield to have improved, I think they would have seen that in Jake King , although he hasn't a great last fortnight, he has certainly improved. I think Kel Moore has become a player, Jay Schulz was good again today, he's had an up and down career but he's improving.
Teams that are winning , individual form doesn't come into it. If your disciplined enough to stick to the team plans then individual form doesn't come into it.

You recruit good kickers, you either have got that skill or haven't . It's a waste of time trying to get players who can't kick, back to square one and start again because the man hours involved in that is not available to AFL players at the moment.
I just thought today, we talked about stepping back inside , and cutting and taking players on- not once were we brave enough to take people on, we were too straight minded earlier today and it made us pay.'

'The one thing I would like to say to our supporter base is just the fact last year we lost games and had a pretty ordinary season and at times we couldn't do anything about it , we just didn't have the blokes up and running and we had to go with the same blokes who let us down week in week out.

I just want to let our supporter base know that we are fully fit and healthy , we've got blokes running around at Coburg- our side won by over 10 goals yesterday against the reigning Premiers.

Blokes who don't respect their position in the side , therfore don't respect the guernsey, won't play.

Therefore we are in a position where we can do that and we will make changes to the side til we have the right blokes in there who want to compete, so I think that supporters shouldn't walk away thinking they are going to get the same old same old, because we will throw it around and give the young blokes an opportunity until we get the right blokes in there who want to compete.

'Collingwood have a longer break this week, so we have to come off a 7 , versus a 9 day break this week. We like it to be a 6 day break ourselves so we can get back there straight-away.

'We were getting beaten at ground level. Clearly our boys in the midfield are extremley disappointed with their efforts, they know that , they understand that and they don't accept that but they were clearly beaten around that area and it just put pressure on every area of that game from that stage onwards. We were really smashed in that part of the game today.

We started Andrew Raines on Corey Jones at the start of the game and wanted Rainesy to do the job and he got beaten in the first few contests and then we went to Jake King as our secondary option, we had sort of set Raines for that job all week, and it didn't work, so you have got to make changes. Jake has been able to play on taller players, he played as a Coburg player at Centre Half Back most of the time, so he has always been able to play on blokes a little bit taller than him. Corey was in fantastic form, I think he was trying to get two weeks out of one after missing last week, and credit to him I thought he played tremendously.

We think Raines dislocated his knee cap but it certainly went back in. It's just a matter of how that sort of settles down over the next few days. We will have to wait til tomorrow to find out where he is at.'

Vale Clinton Grybas

Respected media commentator CLINTON GRYBAS died today at his home in Melbourne.

Clinton was the main sports reporter on 3AW, and had hosted White Line Fever on the FOX Footy Channel on FOXTEL.
He also commentated the football for the 2007 Season on both 3AW and Fox Sports.

On a personal note, I had met Clinton several times during my father's time on the FOX Footy Channel. I found him to be the most considerate, sincere and genuine person you could meet. A true comet of broadcast has died.

Clinton was 32 years old. Only 32.

Life Membersip.

At the 2007 Richmond Annual General Meeting- Roland Weeks, who has volunteered his time at the club for over 20 years, was bestowed with Life Membership.

He has been associated with many components of the club over his time, from Membership to Match Day Activities and is a member of the Richmond Historical Group. He is currently the curator of the Richmond Museum.

On a personal note, Roland provided me with access to the RFC Museum archives, and in particular many unpublished photographs for 'The Tigers- A Centenary of League Football'

NAB Pre Season/ Rookie Draft

At the 2007 NAB AFL Pre Season and Rookie Draft- the Tigers select the following players.

1. DAVID GOURDIS from Subiaco.
He represented WA at the NAB AFL Under 18 Championships

2. CLAYTON COLLARD from Fremantle.
Played one game for Fremantle in 2007 against StKilda.

December 5 Trial Match

On December 5, a trial match was held at Victoria Park involving several young players hoping to make it to the Richmond list through the pre season draft.

Two players in particular were mentioned in reports on fan sites, firstly that of CLAYTON COLLARD- who unofficially kicked between 4 - 6 goals in the match. And secondly, that of DAVID GOURDIS- who played half forward and kick 1 goal.

Other players known to have played in this match include JARROD SILVESTER, KELVIN MOORE and players CALLINAN and ZOMER.

Vale Peter Hogan

Peter Hogan died on Saturday.

He had come to the club in 1963 from Portland, with huge raps- he was what the Tigers were after, a small man, to rove the packs with Frank Dimattina, two years before Kevin Bartlett would burst on the scene.

And rove he did- he manage to secure 40 games between 1963- 1966, kicking 57 goals, including 4 against Carlton in 1963 and Hawthorn in 1965.

At the end of 1966- he went to Sandringham where he both played and coach.
He would go on to coach the Sydney Swans Reserves , Parkdale, and then- return to the club where he started, Richmond, some 20 years later, to coach the Reserves in 1985.

He died on the weekend at the age of 62.

2007 NAB Draft.

On thursday, November 22nd 2007- 'The Tigers'- A Century of League Football was launched at the Richmond Football Club.

Hosted by Geoff Slattery (from GSPublishing), around 100 people gather to hear some of the stories of the great club.

Kevin Bartlett, returned after 16 years, and gave a 25 minute speech on the book, his memory of the club, the club rooms.

Following his speech, I had the opportunity to say a few words (and some bad jokes) and thank everyone for turning up.

The turn out included former players such as Bill Williams (last Richmond player to win the Stawell Gift!), Roger Dean, Michael Roach, Bill Barrott, Francis Bourke, Allan Cooke, Tom Allen, Dale Weightman and former President Ian Wilson.
Current players were also there, Matthew Richardson, Mark Coughlan, Andrew Raines, Kayne Pettifer to name a few.
Some of the former players who had passed away were represented by family members, may of whom who travelled from the country to be there.

I thank everyone for attending, and more importantly, those who have had a chance to read the book and given their positive feedback to me.

Thanks for a day I will never forget.

On the 100th anniversary to the day the RFC was admitted into the VFL, (October 31st 1907), the completed copies of the RFC Centenary History book 'The Tigers' arrived on shores, ready for distribution through bookstores and the club.

Of note, is Richmond and Carlton opening the season with a twilight game on Thursday.
Their Round 14 clash , dubbed their centenary clash, raises some eyebrows, as Richmond's first ever opponent 100 years was Melbourne , not Carlton.

Richmond sponsor and supporter John Ilhan, founder of phone company 'Crazy Johns' died today of a heart attack. He was 42.
The Richmond Football Club released a statement:

“John was a passionate supporter and member of the Club. He was a regular attendee at our games and functions and was always willing to assist his beloved Tigers in whatever way he could,” said Richmond’s CEO Steven Wright.

“His devotion to the Yellow and Black cause extended to a valuable sponsorship through his company Crazy John’s.”

“John’s enthusiasm and energy around the Club will be sadly missed by us all.

“On behalf of the Club’s directors, players, coaches, officials, staff, and all Tiger supporters, we extend our deepest sympathy to John’s family, friends and the staff at Crazy John’s.”

Amongst the sponsorships of Crazy John was the Rookie Club.

RFC List Changes

The RFC announce on this day the delisting of Andrew Krakouer, Brent Hartigan and Patrick Bowden, and rookie Tas Clingan.
As well Jake King was upgraded to the senior list along with Angus Graham.

Punt Road Redevlopment

RFC chief executive Steven Wright announced the intention to open in 2009, an Australian Indigenous Football and Training Institute at Punt Road. This institute would host training camps for indigenous youths who demonstrated sporting talent.

Federal Sports Minister George Brandis said the government was considering a grant of $5 million towards the creation of the institute, pending a more detailed proposal from Richmond.

The government has already committed $2 million towards the Punt Rd Oval redevelopment, under which part of the existing Richmond clubrooms will be demolished, replaced by new medical, sporting and community facilities – The Age

Richmond draft former Footscray player Jordan McMahon in exchange for Pick 19 , and former West Coast player Mitch Morton in exchange for Pick 35.

Richmond's Jay Schulz was potentially offered to Port Adelaide in, but as Port refused to sweeten the Pick 28 deal, the deal did not go ahead. According to Greg Miller, Danny Meyer was reportedly discussed by other clubs in a possible trade.

No Richmond player was drafted away from the club.

Kerang Train Crash takes life of former Richmond Under 19's player
The Kerang Train crash on June 5th sadly took the life of 11 people, including Mr Graeme McMonnies.  Mr McMonnies represented the Richmond Football Club in the Under 19’s in the 1976 season.  In particular, he was voted amongst the six best players for the Round 4 1976 match against Collingwood, which Richmond won 25.18.168 to 21.14.140.  The following week, he was again voted in the six best players in Richmond’s Round 5 loss to Footscray.  In Round 8 1976 he is recorded as kicking his first goal for the season in Richmond’s 43 pts win over Melbourne. 
His passing at the age of 50 years old, is a sad chapter in the history of Richmond’s Under 19’s competition. 
Our sincere condolences to his family and friends.

Nathan Brown returned to a competitive football match by playing for the Coburg Tiger Reserves vs Northern Bullants at Preston Oval.  He was driven to the match by the Coburg Fitness Coach.  Wearing Number 82, Nathan kicked his first goal with his first kick and his second goal in the second quarter.  He finishes the match at half time, and left Preston Oval during the third quarter. In total he played 20 minutes of football - 10 minutes on and off in both quarters.

Supporters and the media criticise the interpretation of the ‘hands in the ball’ ruling for this year.  Richmond lose their 9th consecutive game since the start of the season, and 10th consecutive (including Rd 22 2006).  Essendon beats Richmond for the first time at the MCG since Rd 15 2004.

MONDAY 7 MAY 2007  Richmond Director of Football Greg Miller writes a letter of apology to Richmond Members  I offer my heartfelt apologies to each and every Richmond Member. I understand the pain and disappointment that you all feel. I know what football means to you all and the pride you have in your Club. We have tested your loyalty and commitment many times over the years and thankfully you have trusted and believed in the current administration, bestowed with the honor of guiding your Club.  Yesterday’s result will test your belief and trust. I can only reiterate what I have said before, the process for sustained success is in place. A stable, strong, strategic Board led by a man who really cares – Gary March. A very capable Senior Administration, who under Steven Wright has turned around the Club’s financial position. A Match Committee of hard working and creative people, with strong values, led by Terry Wallace. It is clear that Terry, more than anyone, has bought the Richmond family back together.  Don’t measure the playing group on yesterday’s performance alone. Senior players are either injured (Coughlan, Brown, Simmonds) or not in career best form. Leadership/experience is a very important ingredient you rely on when you bring a younger group together. Yes, we have moved on a few experienced players and may suffer short-term consequences; however our sights are clearly set on the next Tiger Premiership.  I believe in our youth. The camaraderie, talent and attitude of the players at our Club is outstanding. They will excite you at times and disappoint you at others. We will sort out who will go on the journey with us and ensure we get games under the belt of those that will take the Club forwards.  Many will say we’ve heard it before but if you love Richmond, you will take a deep breath and trust that the foundations are solid, and in place.  We will not be responding to the media hysteria, and will adhere to our policies and direction. We’ll learn from the weekend and trust the performance will never be repeated.

Their 6th straight loss for the season is their equal worst opening performance in the League ( = 1962).
Richmond suffer its greatest League defeat since entry in the League.   The 157 point margin exceeded the 141 losing margin from Rd 2 1990 vs Nth Melbourne at the MCG.  It is Geelong's largest score against Richmond ever, their largest Quarter 1, Quarter 2 and Quarter 3 score against Richmond.  In his 50th consecutive match, Kayne Pettifer is fined $1800 (a second offence for him) for wrestling Andrew Mackie during the second quarter.

 Ray Hall is suspended 3 weeks by Richmond and fined $5000 and ordered to participate in community service after an incident in a Prahran bar earlier in the week.   Hall is currently recovering from an injury and will sit out his three weeks upon his return.

 At a press conference, Darren Gaspar announces his immediate retirement from playing for the Richmond Football Club. He decision prompted the club to promote Kelvin Moore into the Rd 6 match vs Geelong as Gaspar was already selected in the starting line up. Darren Gaspar finishes his AFL career with 228 games.

 Kane Johnson is fined $10,000 in total for two criticisms of umpires, at half time and post match. Each offence drew $5000 with a further $2500 being suspended in the event of any further breaches in the next 3 years.

I think you got to have a good look at it and hopefully they get it right next week. Shane Edwards becomes the 1,067th Richmond player to debut.   At 12.34pm, Richmond Immortal Kevin Bartlett, walks into the Grand Hyatt Savoy Room, and into his first Richmond function in 16 years. His appearance at the Tommy Hafey Club Function, kept a secret, co-incided with a celebration of the Tigers and Blues rivalry.  Bartlett, seated at Table 3 with Tom Hafey, was introduced by MC Rex Hunt, prior to the lunch break. The 500+ audience gave him a 1 minute ovation, including some tables providing a standing ovation. Bartlett respond by rising from his table and waving with his right hand.   He did not take the stage during the event, but was photographed after the event with Tom Hafey, waving the 'Tiger Towel.'

Earlier in the day, Nathan Brown announces to the media he will miss a few weeks after swelling in his leg, centimetres below where he snapped his shin bones. Remarkably, he had not missed a training session or practice match all pre season.

A slip in the shower before Christmas was the first sign to Coughlan that his knee had not properly healed after the initial surgery.

TUESDAY 19 DECEMBER 1943 Premiership player LEN ABLETT dies aged 90.   He had been the Tigers' oldest living Premiership player prior to his death.

SATURDAY 9 DECEMBER Richmond CEO Stephen Wright is admitted to Epworth Hospital suffering from Guillian-Barre Syndrome (GBS), a rare condition (3 out of 100,00 people) , which affects the nervous system. During his absence, Richmond's administration and finance manager Michael Stahl will handle all club administration matters.

 THURSDAY 7 DECEMBER PETstock Animal Supplies sign on to a one year contract with Richmond, including sponsoring the 2007 Family Day, where Richmond players will select the winner of the national cutest pet competition.

TUESDAY 5 DECEMBER RFC confirms that Maurie O'Shannassy, Rob Dalton and Anthony Mithen will be elected unopposed to the 2007 Richmond board.
Terry Wallace announces an academy-style program for children of former players during the school holidays. The program is designed to kick-start their preparation as emerging players.

WEDNESDAY 29 NOVEMBER Richmond unveil it's new pre-season strip and clash guernsey for the 2007 season during a fashion parade in the Punt Road lockeroom.  Included in the fashion parade is new recruit Jack Riewoldt, who after the parade, flew back to Hobart for his Year 12 formal at Rosny College.

WEDNESDAY 8 NOVEMBER

At the start of Richmond's pre-season training, former Geelong player KENT KINGSLEY trains, after his manager contacts the club and Terry Wallace agrees to invite him down for a few weeks.
Meanwhile, CAM HOWAT took out the annual 3.8km Tan time-trial with new recruit GRAHAM POLLAK finishing near the back of the field. 14 players all ran under 14 minutes in the time trial- and increase of 10 players from the previous year. After the trial, players convened at Punt Road for a 45 minute ball skill session.

TUESDAY 7 NOVEMBER Former Richmond player DUNCAN KELLAWAY is appointed GEELONG's second physiotherapist and senior runner for 2007.

SATURDAY 28 OCTOBER Recently retired players GREG STAFFORD and MARK CHAFFEY, along with current players JOEL BOWDEN and RAY HALL, and former Richmond player BARRY YOUNG, fly to Shanghai, to watch the Shanghai Tigers Football Club defeat arch rivals Beijing by 32 points. It is hoped the appearance of the Tiger players will grow support in the community for the sport.

WEDNESDAY 25 OCTOBER The AFL releases the 2007 draw, listing Richmond with 6 consecutive games in Melbourne from Round 1.   However Richmond travels to Adelaide for two consecutive weeks in Round 7 and Round 8, as well as to Perth twice, Geelong once, and plays West Coast and Sydney twice.  Interesting points to come out of the Draw include:  + Richmond and Carlton meet in Round 1 for the first time since 1983. + Richmond meet Footscray in Round 4 for the first time since 1975.  + Richmond meet Geelong in Round 6 for the first time since 1980. + Richmond meet Essendon in Round 9 for the first time since 1971. 

SATURDAY 21 OCTOBER Former Richmond player DALE WEIGHTMAN captains a Victorian team comprised of former State players against Tasmania at York Park. Victoria won 12.14.86 to 13.6.84.

FRIDAY 20 OCTOBER 1963 former Richmond Player JOHN CAULFIELD passes away in Sydney aged 62. He began his career in Richmond 4ths in 1959, then played in the Richmond 3rds and 2nds in the early 1960's.

SATURDAY 14 OCTOBER JACOB KING and ALISTER NEVILLE are joint recipients of COBURG TIGERS's 2006 'Jim Sullivan' Best and Fairest Award. Second place is PAUL SHELTON and Third place is ERIC KURET. Another award recipient include LUKE MCGUANE as 'Most Improved Player'.

FRIDAY 13 OCTOBER

  At approximately midday, Fremantle's Graham Polak is drafted to Richmond on the last day of the 2006 October Draft on a contract til 2009. The Age newspaper documents the Polak draft was made with 'less then an hour to go'. (14/10).  For the deal to take place, Richmond swapped first-round picks with Fremantle (#8 for #13) and gave up their Pick 42 for Pick 63.   Richmond then swapped their Pick 63 for Collingwood's Pick 60.   Essendon were originally part of the deal talks, but were removed to allow this deal to take place.  The deal also involved Collingwood's Chris Tarrant becoming a Docker and Paul Medhurst becoming a Magpie.

Richmond Immortal Kevin Bartlett is inducted into the Sports Australia Hall of Fame at the induction dinner at Crown Casino's Paladium.   Of the 342 members, he is just the 20th AFL Footballer to be inducted, and the third who has played for Richmond (Jack Dyer, Ian Stewart) 
Andrew Raines is named for the first time in the Australian International Rules squad for the two Tests in Ireland.

SATURDAY 7 OCTOBER Respected Herald Sun journalist Mike Sheahan announces his Top 50 players of the 2006 season. Richmond's Troy Simmonds is the highest rank Tiger at No. 25, and Joel Bowden is the only other Tiger on the list, at No. 28

THURSDAY 5 OCTOBER Former Triple Brisbane Lions Premiership player Craig McRae is appointed as Richmond Player Development Coach.

WEDNESDAY 4 OCTOBER Former Hawthorn, Bulldog and Kangaroo player Jade Rawlings is appointed to the coaching panel in the position of tutoring Richmond's key position player for the 2007 season.   He replaced David Wheadon.

SATURDAY 30 SEPTEMBER The last broadcast of FOX FOOTY occurs with the broadcast of the Under 18's curtain raiser between the Calder Cannons and the Oakleigh Chargers. Former Richmond player Kevin Bartlett calls the action with Jason Bennett and Kevin Sheahan. Both Bennett and Bartlett were the two originally commentators on FOX FOOTY's first ever day of Broadcast 5 years earlier.  At halftime of the main game, NATHAN FOLEY represents Richmond in the Grand Final sprint. The winner is BRENDAN FEVOLA, with a handicap of 8metres- FOLEY finishes in third position.

WEDNESDAY 27 SEPTEMBER At the unofficial Richmond Premiership reunion, with no media, and no cameras present, MC KEVIN BARTLETT is approached by  NEVILLE CROWE and shakes his hand for the first time in 15 years- in some peoples mind, the first step towards healing their rift. It was NEVILLE CROWE who along with several Richmond officials appointed ALAN JEANS as Richmond coach to replace KEVIN BARTLETT at the end of 1991 season.

MONDAY 25 SEPTEMBER At the 2006 Brownlow Medal, TROY SIMMONDS polls 11 votes to lead the Richmond players in the final votes.  The remaining votes were: MATTHEW RICHARDSON 10 votes JOEL BOWDEN 8 votes PATRICK BOWDEN 8 votes DEAN POLO 5 votes SHANE TUCK 4 votes ANDREW KELLAWAY 4 votes CHRIS NEWMAN 3 votes ANDREW RAINES 3 votes CHRIS HYDE 3 votes GREG STAFFORD 2 votes GREG TIVENDALE 2 votes RICHARD TAMBLING 1 vote KAYNE PETTIFER 1 vote  The funeral for former Richmond player TERRY SMITH is held. Former 1947-1948 Richmond player MAX EVANS dies aged 83. He began his career in the Richmond 2nds in 1947, before playing 7 senior games.

THURSDAY 21 SEPTEMBER Joel Bowden is awarded the AFL Community Leadership award for being a 'positive role model for kids in North Richmond'. His $10,000 cheque was donated to the Lighthouse Foundation and the Tigers in the Community Foundation.  The RFC post on their website a clarification that David Rodan , Tom Roach and Jeremy Humm 'have been involved in on-going discussions with the Club about their playing futures over the past few weeks'. The post was not signed by any Richmond employee.

WEDNESDAY 20 SEPTEMBER Richmond captain KANE JOHNSON wins his first ever Best and Fairest award. He becomes only the third captain since 1972 to win the Best and Fairest. TUESDAY 19 SEPTEMBER

 Richmond's 1980 premiership player Terry 'Brutus' Smith passes away at the age of 47 after a short battle with cancer.  He began his career with the Richmond 3rds in 1976, participating in the 1977 Premiership Victory over Footscray. He then played for the Reserves from 1977 -1980, and part of 1982 and 1986.   His senior career culminated in a Premiership in his first season, in just his 22nd senior game.  In his second season he represented Victoria in 1981. In total he is credited with 164 games with Richmond (56 senior, 53 Reserves, 55 Under 19's), for two premierships (Rich 3rds 1977 / Richmond Seniors 1980). His career spanned from 1977- 1986. He is sadly the first member of the 1980 Premiership side to pass away.

MONDAY 11 SEPTEMBER JOEL BOWDEN is the only Richmond player chosen in the 2006 All Australian Team. He is selected at Centre Half-Back.

THURSDAY 7 SEPTEMBER TERRY WALLACE advises ANDREW KELLAWAY to retire from football and that he will not be offering him a new contract.

WEDNESDAY 6 SEPTEMBER ANDREW RAINES finishes runner up in the 2006 NAB AFL Rising Star award. His 33 votes was 10 behind winner Danyle Pearce of Port Adelaide. The record is 10 goals held by Dick Harris in 1944.

THURSDAY 24 AUGUST 2006 The Richmond Football Club reveal on this day their new 'clash strip' - the traditional guernsey with additional yellow side panels, yellow collar, yellow around the sleeves and a wider yellow slash.  A total of 6,403 votes were registered through the website, with the new strip receiving 67% of the vote (4,231) and the other strip receiving 2,172.

TUESDAY FEBRUARY 7 2006 A Superclinic is held from 10.30am - Noon at North Ballarat Oval.  Players then make an in store appearance at the AFL Store in Wendouree Village from 3.45pm - 4.30pm.  Then, a Community Forum is held at North Ballarat Football Club in Creswick Road, Ballarat at 7.30pm. Local football and sporting club administrators and volunteers listen to leading Tiger identities about the AFL's latest techniques and best-practice policies across coaching, sports injury treatment, club management, goal setting and leadership.
3yr old TYLER FISHLOCK, suffering from retinoblastoma, cancer of the eye, is visited by NATHAN BROWN and KANE JOHNSON at his home in Caroline Springs. A tiger supporter, he is photographed on the shoulders of BROWN and JOHNSON on the eve of an operation to remove his eye.

MONDAY FEBRUARY 6 2006 The entire RFC playing list and coaching staff travel to Ballarat to being a 4 day visit as part of the AFL's 2006 Community Camps Program. They arrive at 1pm with a Civic Reception by the Mayor held at 2pm. Training is held at North Ballarat Oval from 3.30pm - 5pm. A Black Tie night with Senior Players and the coach is held at 6pm.
